Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Mushrooms

Where are the mushrooms from?

We pride ourselves on sourcing our mushrooms exclusively from organic farmers on small-scale farms in Canada, the US, Siberia and Alaska. This deliberate choice ensures that our products are free from dextrin, starch, or lab-grown materials, and also avoids any association with corporate agriculture. By directly partnering with these independent growers, we bypass intermediary suppliers commonly used by larger entities, guaranteeing the quality and purity of our mushroom materials.

How are your organic mushroom fruiting bodies grown?

Our organic mushroom fruiting bodies are cultivated on farms rather than in warehouses. Our farmers carefully create an environment that mimics the natural habitat of mushrooms, growing them on the native hardwood, which is the mushroom’s preferred substrate.

Why is hardwood-grown important for mushroom fruiting bodies?

Hardwood-grown mushroom fruiting bodies contain a higher concentration and greater variety of bio-active compounds, such as beta-glucans, triterpenes, and ergosterols. This cultivation method is crucial in ensuring the production of high-quality and potent mushroom extracts.

How long does it take to grow the mushrooms?

The entire fungal life cycle, from seed to harvesting, can take up to 12 months for some mushroom species.

How are the mushrooms harvested and processed?

  • The mushrooms are carefully hand-harvested at the precise moment when they reach their peak potency.
  • After harvesting, they are dried in the sun to increase vitamin D content.
  • Then the mushrooms are transported to the extraction facility.

How are the mushrooms extracted?

Step 1: Receiving and Sorting the Raw Material

  • Upon arrival at the extraction facility, the dried mushroom fruiting bodies are carefully examined and sorted by hand to eliminate any impurities. Subsequently, they are ground into a coarse powder.

Step 2: Hot Water Extraction

  • The ground mushrooms are placed into an extraction tank where they are subjected to hot water. The heat effectively breaks down the chitin present in the mushroom walls, releasing a range of beneficial components such as vitamins, minerals, and active compounds. The resulting liquid filtrate is then drained and set aside.

Step 3: Dual Extraction

  • To further maximize the extraction of active compounds, an ethanol solution is introduced to the remaining mushroom material in the extraction tank. This step is particularly crucial for species with thick cell walls. The resulting liquid filtrate is collected and combined with the hot water filtrate obtained in the previous step.

Step 4: Membrane Separation

  • The combined hot water and dual liquid filtrates undergo a specialized membrane separation process. This process ensures that substances with large molecular sizes, including beta-glucans and other active compounds, are retained and concentrated effectively.

Step 5: Concentration and Drying

  • Using a vacuum, the liquid filtrate is concentrated until it transforms into a powder. Importantly, the solids that were removed during the extraction process are not wasted and are added back in. The spray drying method is utilized without the use of excipients and fillers, employing mushroom on mushroom assistance during spray drying instead of maltodextrin. The final powder undergoes steam sterilization before being packaged, free of any remnants of water or alcohol.

Why are some mushrooms hot water extracted and others are dual extracted?

  • Chaga and reishi mushrooms require dual extraction, involving both hot water and alcohol, because they possess beneficial compounds that are not fully water-soluble. Dual extraction ensures that these non-water-soluble compounds, such as triterpenes, are effectively extracted from the mushrooms. These species also tend to have thicker cell walls, making it more challenging for the hot water extraction alone to release all the desired active components.
  • On the other hand, lion's mane, turkey tail, and cordyceps mushrooms primarily contain water soluble active compounds. These compounds can be efficiently extracted through hot water extraction alone, as they readily dissolve in water. Additionally, the cell walls of these mushrooms are not as dense as those of chaga and reishi, allowing for easier access to the water-soluble components during extraction.
  • Therefore, the different extraction methods are employed based on the unique composition and properties of each mushroom species, ensuring that the most effective extraction process is utilized to obtain the desired bioactive compounds.

Are your Mushroom extracts made from mycelium or fruiting body?

Purest Mushroom extract powders consist of 100% pure mushroom fruiting bodies. Our products do not contain any added binders, fillers, starch, grain, or mycelium.

Do you provide certificates of analysis (COAs)?

Yes, we do. Please follow the link below for an article including all our COAs.

Why is Purest Mushrooms not in the USDA Organic Integrity Database?

Typically, consumer brands like Purest Mushrooms do not appear in the USDA Organic Integrity database. This is because the brands themselves do not directly apply for organic certification. It is the facilities where the end products are produced that need to undergo the organic certification process. The facility producing our extracts is Evolve Contract Manufacturing and they are listed as certified in the database. USDA Organic Integrity Database for Evolve Contract Manufacturing

What's the shelf life of your extracts?

Our extracts have a shelf life of 2 years from the manufacturing date. They can be stored on the countertop, in a cupboard, or in the fridge. It is important to keep them away from excessive heat and light.

Taking Our Mushrooms

I'm not feeling anything, are they working?

It's important to understand that medicinal mushrooms, being adaptogens, may not produce immediate noticeable effects. The benefits of medicinal mushrooms are typically experienced over a longer period of consistent use. These mushrooms are not intended to provide immediate sensations. Forego immediate gratification for the long term benefits.

What is the recommended dosage?

For overall health and immune support, our mushroom extract servings typically begin at 1000 mg, which is approximately half a teaspoon or 2 capsules. Starting with this amount can help you assess your response, and if necessary, you can consider higher doses based on advice from your healthcare provider.

What is the best way to consume your products?

The uses of our mushroom extracts are many. You can incorporate them into hot water, coffee, tea, smoothies, shakes, yogurt, bone broth, and more.

Is it preferable to take medicinal mushrooms on an empty stomach or with food?

There is no hard rule for this and often it is a matter of personal preference.

Can I consume all the medicinal mushrooms together?

Certainly, you have the option to take all the mushrooms you have ordered at once if you wish. Some studies suggest that consuming various medicinal mushrooms simultaneously may create a synergy that enhances their potency and effectiveness. However, our general recommendation is not to exceed 3-5 servings per day, unless.

Are mushrooms safe to consume during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, it is crucial to recognize that the response to adaptogen use varies for each woman. It is advisable to consult with your healthcare physician and approach this topic with caution.

Can I consume mushrooms if I have cancer or other health problems?

  • Incorporating functional mushrooms into a treatment regimen may provide support for individuals diagnosed. Extensive research has indicated that functional mushroom standardized extracts and beta-d-glucans can enhance specific immune cell levels and potentially impact the overall quality of life and life expectancy for certain cancer diagnoses. However, it is crucial to emphasize that the effects of functional mushrooms on cancer can vary depending on factors such as the type and stage of cancer, as well as the individual's unique circumstances.
  • As a general guideline, it is always advisable to consult both an oncologist and a naturopathic doctor who specializes in cancer treatment before considering the inclusion of functional mushroom extracts as part of your treatment protocol. Conventional cancer treatments like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can often weaken or compromise the immune system. In such cases, functional mushrooms hold promise as they are currently undergoing continuous investigation to determine their potential benefits within an integrative treatment plan for cancer.
